Oral cancer includes cancers of the lips, tongue, floor of the mouth, cheeks, throat, sinuses, and hard and soft palates. Oral cancer, like all forms of cancer, can be life-threatening. However, when diagnosed early it can usually be treated successfully. During your routine exams, our dentist will check for any signs of oral cancer. If cancer is detected, he will perform an oral biopsy to verify the diagnosis and determine the exact type of problem.
Oral biopsies are a medical procedure in which a small sample of gum or other tissue is taken from your mouth and sent to a lab for analysis. This procedure can be performed fairly quickly. Our dentist will first sterilize the area and administer a local anesthetic. If the site from which we are taking the tissue sample is difficult to reach, we may provide a more powerful form of sedation. Your mouth will remain numb for several hours following treatment, and you will experience some soreness for a few days while the site of the biopsy heals.
When the results from your biopsy come back, our dentist will work with you to develop a customized treatment plan to help you regain your oral health.
